August Gugelmann joined the firm in 2005 and practices at the trial and appellate level in criminal defense and complex civil litigation. He represents individuals and corporations in complex criminal cases in both state and federal courts, international antitrust investigations, mail and wire fraud prosecutions, insider trading, obstruction of justice, trade secret theft, economic espionage, and securities fraud prosecutions. In addition, August represents individuals charged with drug offenses, violent crimes, robberies, gun crimes, and gang-related activity. His practice includes defending individuals and corporations in complex civil cases in federal and state court, including SEC investigations. August’s trial experience includes the first economic espionage case to be tried by a jury, which resulted in acquittal or dismissal of all counts. August has been selected as a Rising Star or Super Lawyer by Northern California Super Lawyers Magazine every year since 2012, and he serves on the Northern District of California’s Criminal Justice Act panel.

  • Reversal on appeal of federal terrorism sentencing enhancement
  • Reversal on appeal of California kidnapping conviction
  • Misdemeanor resolution for software engineer charged with multiple counts of felony trade secret theft
  • Dismissal of RICO and fraud charges in investigation of pharmaceutical industry
  • Dismissal of charges against tech company employee indicted for trade secret theft
  • Dismissal or acquittal on all charges against engineer indicted for economic espionage and trade secret theft
  • Diversionary resolution of arson charges
  • Non-prosecution of executive in alternative energy industry following investigations by two United States Attorneys’ Offices
